Before you start playing Roulette you should always find out what rules and different betting options apply to this specific game. Firstly, it should be stressed that there are two types of Roulette; European and American Roulette.

Differences between European and American Roulette

Whether you choose to play the European or the American style, Roulette is the most popular casino table game in the world. The difference lies in the fact that the European Roulette wheel has one zero pocket (“0”), whereas the American Roulette wheel has both one zero and two zero pockets (“0” and “00”). In both cases, however, the pockets of the roulette wheel are numbered from 1 to 36.

How to play Roulette

A typical Roulette table, either European or American, is disposed in a predetermined arrangement (whether on land based or online casino, Ed.). The roulette wheel is at one end and the croupier is the only person allowed to deal with it.

Right in front of it, the table is covered with a green felt. This is the area where players place their bets. The croupier spins the roulette wheel in one direction and then spins the ball in the opposite direction around a circular track. The pockets of the roulette wheel are numbered from 1 to 36. In number ranges from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, odd numbers are red and even are black. In ranges from 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, odd numbers are black and even are red.

Regarding the differences mentioned above, in the European roulette wheel there is a green pocket numbered 0 (zero), while in the American there is a second green pocket marked 00. In most casinos around the world, the pockets on the roulette wheel are numbered in the same order. More particularly, this order conforms to the following clockwise sequence:

European Roulette: 0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26

American Roulette: 0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2

Types of Bets

The main betting options for Roulette players are to predict the pocket into which the ball will land, whether the pocket colour will be red or black and whether the winning number will be odd or even. Moreover, roulette bets fall into two categories; inside and outside bets. An inside bet means that the player bets on a set of no more than six numbers. An outside bet means that the player bets on a set of twelve numbers, as well as on the pocket colour and on odd/even.

Inside Bets have higher payouts and are described as follows:

Straight or Single: A bet placed on a single number only. The chip is placed entirely on the middle of a number square.

Split: A bet on two adjoining numbers. The chip is placed on the line between these numbers.

Street: A bet on three numbers on a single horizontal line. The chip is placed on the edge line of a number at the end of the line.

Corner or Square: A bet on four numbers in a square layout. The chip is placed at the horizontal and vertical intersection of the lines framing the four numbers.

Six line or Double Street: A bet on two lines of three numbers each (six numbers in total) that lie next to each other. The chip is placed on the intersection between the two lines along the side of the betting area.

There are also combination bets on 0, 00 with 1, 2, 3 but these types of bets are not always allowed in the casinos, especially the ones established in Europe.

Outside Bets typically have smaller payouts with better odds at winning, as compared to Inside Bets. They are classified into the following categories:

1 to 18: A bet on numbers 1 through 18. The chips are placed on the special space marked 1-18.

19 to 36: A bet on numbers 19 through 36. The chips are placed on the special space marked 19-36.

Red or black: A bet on whether the winning number will land in red or black. The chip is placed on either of the red or black spaces. In case the ball lands in “0” and “00” all bets on red/black are lost.

Even or odd: A bet on an even or odd number. The chip is placed on the corresponding square marked Odd or Even

Dozen bets: A bet on the first (1-12), second (13-24), or third group (25-36) of twelve numbers. The chip is placed on the corresponding square for each dozen.

Column bets: A bet on all numbers on any of the three vertical lines The chip is placed on the space below numbers 34, 35 and 36.
